Grandma’s Bookbag

These three books are from my toddler/preschooler book bag and are active books that involve the children. When I am reading to multiple children, which is usually the case, they take turns being the “doer” on the page.

Buzzy Bee by Emma – A Slide-And-Seek Book

Each page on this book asks where Buzzy Bee is and then suggest a possibility. The child puts his finger in a hole to slide a page insert out and show that it isn’t Buzzy Bee hiding there but another insect or animal–until the last page!

Amazing Animals: A Spin & Spot Book

Amazing Animals is an engaging matching book. You spin up an animal on a wheel on each page and then match the animal with the same one on the page. There are eight matches per page, but we usually do three and then move to the next page to keep their interest. For the 2-year-olds, I move the wheel but the 3-year-olds and up can do it themselves.

Noisy Fire Engine Peekaboo!

This is a book where you open the flap and an emergency sound comes out. The sounds are light sensitive so we found you can’t read the book with the sounds unless it is fairly well lit. All the children seem to enjoy this book, but especially the boys. The flap pages are not very sturdy so this book is only read with my supervision to protect those flap pages.

Grandma’s Bookbag

Danny the Workhorse, Chester the Rooster, Snoopy the Sheep, and Shadow the Barn Cat by Helga Mosser are top favorites in Grandma’s book bag. They are delightful, hardback storybooks about farm animals that teach a character lesson.

The lady who writes this series is a homeschool mom, and she told me the stories came from real-life events that she observed on her grandpa’s farm. The illustrations are superb, and we enjoy the continuity of the farm, characters, and animals from one story to the next. We are eagerly waiting for one on Dolly the Milk Cow.

creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and

Grandma’s Bookbag

For those who read our blog regularly, you know that I have scheduled time each week with my different sets of grandchildren.

I have three book bags. One bag with board books that toddlers can’t destroy. That bag I give to the toddlers to occupy them while waiting for their turn to pick books. The next bag contains activity books and other books of preschool interest. The last bag has books with longer storylines or chapter books. Abby (10), Bethany (8), and Christina (6) usually pick the chapter book currently in the book bag for their reading time, and of course, all are welcome to sit and listen along.

We plan to begin sharing blog posts about top favorites from Grandma’s book bags in the coming months.

Here are two of my current favorites:

Train Man by Andrew Zimmerman & David Clemesha

This delightful board book is a favorite of Andrew (4) who loves trains.

Big brother in the book wants to be a train man when he grows up so this book follows him in his imaginary plans. He includes his little brother, letting him wear the train man hat and blow the whistle. We enjoy saying, “All aboard” at the appropriate places in the book.

The Gardner by Sarah Steward

Joseph and Elissa gave this book to me for Mother’s Day, and it is my top favorite. It is a longer story book with extremely imaginative illustrations. Every time we read it, we notice new details in the pictures. It is a story from the depression era of a little girl who has to go live with her uncle in the city for several months and the joy and transformations she brings in her new home.

Teri
