Gigi’s 88th Drive-by Birthday Party

Gigi turned 88 in the midst of Covid-19. Nathan and Melanie planned and beautifully executed a drive-by birthday party for her.

It turned out to be an exciting evening here as Anna and Mary prepped Christopher’s children with costumes and then decorated their bikes and a wagon since they would be the side walk part of the drive-by celebrating.

Many friends who drove by decorated their cars or carried Happy Birthday posters, adding to the festivities. There were smiles and laughters, waves, Happy Birthday shouts, and socially distanced conversations from vehicles to Gigi’s lawn chair. Andrew loved running to the cars for any cards or gifts to be delivered to Gigi.

Nathan wisely set up the cupcake stand just beyond the driveway so guests could visit with Gigi, and then pull forward for the birthday dessert.

The amazing Nathan Maxwell family who coordinated and put on the special party!

We were personally blessed to be part of the birthday celebration for Gigi and also by the outpouring of love for her:

>>From Nathan and Melanie thinking of and carrying out the party, right on the heels of a long-distance wedding trip
>>From Gigi’s friends and family who made the effort to leave the comfort of their homes to drive by (some neighbors walked by) and greet her
>>From Anna and Mary’s investment in making it extra special for Gigi and Christopher’s children. Christopher’s children could have just walked over and said, “Happy Birthday, Gigi,” but the costumes and decorated vehicles made it that much better for everyone.

Gigi is a loved part of our family, her church, and our community.

“One generation shall praise thy works to another,
and shall declare thy mighty acts” (Psalm 145:4).

  1. I love how happy Gigi looks in these photos! What a wonderful way to show her how loved she is. On my daily walks and runs I’ve been really enjoying seeing the ways that my neighbors are celebrating each other and special occasions like birthdays and graduations with chalk art, garden displays, porch concerts, and other creative endeavors. A reminder that even though things are different than usual right now, we can still express our love and appreciation. A very happy birthday to Gigi 🙂 (And it looks like it was!)

  2. This is just about the sweetest thing I’ve heard about in a long time! Nathan’s family seems very thoughtful.

  3. What a delightful post to see everyone happy and having fun celebrating Gigi’s birthday in such a unique way. I know she’s a real blessing to all of you, and I’m sure she felt very special and loved. It looks like everyone did a great job of organizing everything, and the kids all look so cute. I love Joshua’s beard! Nice idea in passing out the cupcakes too! Your family is so thoughtful.

  4. Thank you for this! What a “bright-light” you all shine out there in Kansas! Rejoicing in the 88 years of life the Lord has given your GiGi! What an expression of love! And what a great neighborhood you all have! Truly, sets me back in time to the 80’s of my up bringing! We live out in the “boonies” – not really a neighborhood, but we do try our best to know the few neighbors God has given us! Teri, your note of encouragement to me sometime ago was to remain faithful in praying for my parents who are not believers! I pray diligently for their salvation and that I too can rejoice one day with my children and perhaps grandchildren as she celebrates what Jesus has done for her! It is difficult not having believing grand-parents for my children. But trusting the Lord in His sovereignty over their souls! God is good to give us what we call O’Families (Other) to invest in our children spiritually! (Virtually speaking – you all would be one of them)! To God be the Glory!
