Surgery Recovery Update from Anna Marie

Dear Friends,

Thank you all so much for your sweet comments, prayers, and encouragement!

Surgery went very well, though due to the continued growth and location of the tumor, the surgeon recommended a more extensive surgery than we were originally hoping for. Christopher and I understood the necessity and agreed that it was best the approach at this point. While the tumor was very close to the chest wall, following surgery the surgeon said it appears that it had not yet penetrated. The surgeon removed some lymph nodes for testing, so once pathology comes back in about a week, we will know the full nature of the tumor and whether it has spread into the lymph system.

I am feeling great other than some muscle-type soreness (feels like I just did a left-armed pushup workout yesterday after not doing them for a few months), but I’m not in pain. That’s what we had heard about the laser surgery from other ladies who had come here, and it seems to be holding true for me as well. We came back to our hotel shortly after surgery, and I’ve been getting good rest, eating well, and have been walking frequently at the recommendation of the surgeon.

We have loved seeing photos and updates of our children’s activities sent to us from Grandma and the aunties. It’s hard to believe Ruthanne turned six years old yesterday! I remember her birth like it was yesterday … only it seems like it was forever ago in many ways. She was thrilled to help decorate cupcakes for her birthday celebration last night (her second celebration since we did our own family party on Saturday)!

Again, thank you all for your support. As I was preparing for surgery and then on the operating table before the anesthesia kicked in, it was overwhelming to think of a world-wide prayer team lifting us up. The Scriptures and encouragement you all shared really encouraged me, along with verses from Psalm 18 which carried me through another day of unknowns exactly one month prior, when Simon Peter entered the world!

“For who is God save the LORD? Or who is a rock save our God?
It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my
way perfect. He maketh my feet like hind’s feet, and
setteth me upon my high places.” Psalm 18:31-33

  1. We’re so grateful that you are recovering well from your surgery. The children look like they are having a wonderful time with the rest of the family. Ruthanne did a lovely job on the cupcakes. We’ll be continuing to lift you up in prayer as you heal and wait for more news.

  2. Hi Anna Marie, thank you for sharing what so far seems like very encouraging news as you await the final report. Glad the surgery is behind you now, and that you aren’t in pain. I have to tell you that even though I’m a 63 year old wife and mother, you are such an inspiration to me, and I’m sure to many others, as to how you are trusting in the Lord and responding in this situation. I can personally testify that even in our worst-case scenario situations and our deepest sorrow, He is still good, He is always faithful and He will never forsake His own. I know this to be the absolute truth, and I know He will use what you are going through for His glory and His ultimate purposes. He will never let our pain and suffering be wasted. When I looked closely at the beautiful picture of you on the beach, I thought of a poem I heard long ago called “Footprints in the Sand.” You are such a sweet, godly woman and I know you will be glad to get back home to those precious children. Ruthanne’s birthday cupcakes look yummy and it’s so nice you and Christopher could do Facetime with them. And Joshua seems like such a little man! You and Christopher are doing a wonderful job teaching your little ones the way of the Lord, and there’s nothing more important. I will continue praying for you and for God’s Hand of blessing upon you in your healing process. Blessings to you.

  3. You are such a beautiful example of what trusting and hoping in the Lord looks like, Anna Marie. I have been praying and will continue to do so. Thank you for sharing updates.
    Isaiah 26:3.

  4. I will continue to pray for healing and a full recovery for you. You are blessed to have such an amazing family who loves and supports you. Take care.

  5. Happy 6th birthday Ruthanne.
I will continue to pray for Anna Marie’s health and well-being throughout this difficult time. Hopefully she is back home and enjoying time with her babies soon and that her medical treatments heal her.

  6. Praising the Lord! Continuing to pray for you, for an easy recovery and for the pathology to reveal even better results than you could hope for – God is mighty!!

“What do ye imagine against the Lord? he will make an utter end: affliction shall not rise up the second time.” Nahum 1:9

  7. I am continuing to pray for you, Anna – and for Chris and your sweet family. Psalm 18:28-29 are my life verses: “For Thou wilt light my candle; the Lord my God will enlighten my darkness. For by Thee I have run through a troop; and by my God I have leaped over a wall.” No wall is taller or stronger than our God! I’m so thankful you and Chris know that to be true!

  8. We are praising the Lord all went well. May God continue to strengthen you in the days ahead as He leads you one day at a time.

  9. Praise the Lord for the wonderful news!! I hadn’t heard of laser surgery performed like that. Continued prayers as you await the outcome and healing.

  10. What a testimony to the faithfulness of God and how He is truly with us always. He is there in our darkest times as well as our happy moments of life. He is always good and faithful to give us the daily grace we need to live this life. Thank you for giving us all another glimpse of our good, good Father.

I also think it is so wonderful how the older Maxwell girls are able to serve their family during their singleness. I have 4 daughters that are in their 20’s (almost 30) and so many times I find myself wishing that they could be married. I am learning that singleness is indeed good too . It is good to see your girls serving their family and community and living the life that God planned for them before the beginning of time. It is hard sometimes, but again, I trust my Father to do what is absolutely best for all of us.

We’re continuing to pray daily; thank you for the updates.

  11. We are so thankful for this update, for the good report on the surgery being finished, no pain, and that you are not still in the hospital Anna Marie. We are praying – and we will continue to pray! You are on our minds and in our hearts constantly.

  12. Have been praying for you and your family. My daughter is also. My daughter was diagnosed at 8 with an inoperable brain stem tumor. She received treatment at M.D. Anderson here in Houston. 22 years later she is cancer free!

  13. So happy you were feeling well enough to post an update. We will continue to pray for a desirable pathology report.

Happy Birthday to sweet little Ruthanne!

  14. I am thanking the Lord for a successful surgery. I know it must be very difficult to be away from your sweet children. A big Happy Birthday to Ruthanne! My continued prayers go out to all of you. In particular, Anna, I am praying that Jesus would overwhelm you with a great peace as you wait. Also, I am praying for tremendous wisdom for all of the medical team involved in your situation.

  15. Amazing that you’ve been able to personally write on the blog! And such a joy to hear of your steadfast faith and patience, skills which will set your whole family in good stead for their futures as the Lord leads each one through the paths He has in order to glorify Himself.

You are a true example of the great verse in Psalm 144:12
“That our sons may be as plants grown up in their youth; that our daughters may be as corner stones, polished after the similitude of a palace”

May the beginning of that Psalm also strengthen you for the days ahead, Anna Marie, and all, as we keep you in continual prayer…

  16. Praise God from whom all blessings flow! Anna Marie and Christopher have been a part of our daily prayers with our Samaritan Ministry family. When my mind fails, the Lord is faithful to use my children to remind me to pray… You all have become a part of our family! Truly, a blessing to share in God’s wonderful goodness to all of the world! Your family is a beautiful illustration of the Gospel! The world needs to see Christ in action! Psalm 98

  17. Continued prayers for healing and peace. Thank you for the update and please keep us posted. Praying you will soon be home with your sweet children, and a belated Happy Birthday to Ruthanne!

  18. Wishing you all the very best Anna. You are a lovely sweet lady and a wonderful mother.
I enjoy reading your blogs. Might you write more in the future? I know you are busy healing and looking after your beautiful family but you have such such a beautiful natural style of writing.
