Hello! My name is Andrew James Maxwell, but you can call me Drew if you like. I’m God’s special gift to my daddy and mommy and big sisters—their first little boy. Being in mommy’s tummy went pretty fine for awhile, until a week ago Friday. Then, everything got really tight. So Mommy and I had to stay at the hospital. Finally, it was time for me to come.
After I was born, I cried. There were so many people looking at me, and it was very bright and not warm like it was inside Mommy. I couldn’t quite get my breath, so they had to put this thing over my mouth to help me breathe. Since the doctor knew I needed some help, they decided to take me to the place where all the little babies go that need help.
Before I left, Mommy asked if she could please touch me. I was already in my own bed and had all kinds of beeping machines attached to me. The people were really nice and pushed me close. Mommy held my hand and told me she loved me and to be a big boy.
I went to my room, and since I was struggling, they put an IV line into my belly button. When they were done, Daddy and Mommy came in, and Mommy talked to me and touched me. I think she was glad to know I was okay.
Around lunchtime, my body didn’t do so well, and suddenly, the room filled up with all kinds of people. The nurses put some medicine in my IV line. I guess it saved my life! I didn’t mean to scare Daddy and Mommy, and I’ll try not to do that again. The rest of the day was okay, but they had to redo my IV line, because it wasn’t working too well. I remembered Mommy’s telling me to be a big boy.
I got to meet my big sisters: Abigail, Bethany, and Christina. I think I looked kind of different than they thought I would with this funny oxygen thing on, but they liked seeing me. I can’t wait to go home and be cuddled! My big sister, Christina, thinks I need to sit up, but as many times as my Aunt Mary tries to tell her I can’t, she doesn’t understand. Maybe she will someday.
I want to thank you for praying for me. I still need it as I grow healthy and strong. I want to grow up and be a man of God, just like Andrew and James were in the Bible. I love you all!
(And thanks to my Aunt Sarah for helping me with this post.)
